Optometrists are well positioned to serve this population as Medicare ofers incentives for insurers to make certain that diabetic patients receive an annual di- lated eye exam. Looking at our network of more than 3,100 ofces and nearly 4,000 independent clinicians, we see that Vision Source® is uniquely positioned to collaborate with the inno- vative, risk-taking groups that are forming in response to these trends. Our clinicians practice full scope optometry, including detection and management of systemic diseases. Additionally, the Vision Source® infrastructure of local leadership by our 175 administrators provides single point contact for regional managed care organizations. To equip our members with the tools and training these organizations require of their partners, we have begun a series of initiatives, including: • Quality Measurement We introduced our members to the Net Promoter Score (NPS) method of quality measurement and provided on- line and in-ofce resources to assist them in capturing this information. Tese emerging health care organiza- tions require substantiated evidence of quality of care from each member of the collaborative care team. • BrainStream Diabetic Practice Protocols Derived from research and practice experience, this program provides Vision Source® clinicians with a com- mon set of ophthalmic, evidence-based clinical care guidelines for detection and management of diabetic eye disease. We've also developed a proprietary reporting system for our members to use to assure primary care physicians receive timely and consistent reports on pa- tient eye health. • Outreach to Integrated Health Organizations Vision Source® actively works to change the perception of optometry in the medical community, particularly CHANGING THE PERCEPTION OF OPTOMETRY S P O N S O R E D B Y V I S I O N S O U R C E F ROM ITS FOUNDING IN 1991, Vision Source® has been dedicated to helping independent optometry succeed. "En- riching lives by enabling independent optometrists to reach their full poten- tial" serves as the foundation for our mission-driven culture. CHANGING THE PERCEPTION OF OPTOMETRY In 2013, our leadership looked at the healthcare land- scape and found that we needed to regard optometry not as an isolated profession, but as an important component of emerging healthcare delivery systems. Several trends con- tributed to this fnding: • Rising Healthcare Costs Health care costs have risen (currently 17.4% of Gross Domestic Product; up from 14% 20 years ago). Te re- imbursement models of the past are rapidly changing as a fee-for-value system replaces the fee-for-service model. Te narrow networks required to deliver high-quality cost-efective outcomes will include a strong primary care system that includes Vision Source® optometrists. • Aging Population Te Baby Boomer generation is aging into Medicare at the rate of 10,000 people per day. Currently, 30% of them choose Medic are Advantage plans to supplement their basic Medicare coverage. Te plans receive fnancial in- centives from the federal government based on 81 quality measures and providers on the panels of these plans are re- quired to meet the government quality standards. • Increasing Incidence of Chronic Disease States Currently, 9.5 percent of the US population or about 30 million people have diabetes. By 2034, the American Diabetes Association estimates that 12 percent of the U.S. population, or 44 million people, will sufer from Jim Greenwood President & CEO Vision Source ® OPTOME TRIC MANAGEMENT CORPORATE PROFILE
