A recent study provided important insights about what contact lens wearers experience from moment to moment. 1 It was conducted by an independent market research group that studied 243 soft contact lens wearers, including wearers of both reusable soft lenses (n=142) and daily disposable contact lenses (n=101). Perhaps not surprisingly, there was a general downward trend in lens performance (comfort, satis- faction and vision quality) from insertion to end of day. But averages don't tell the whole story. Here are three important insights from the research: 1. Three in fve wearers (in both daily disposable and reusable lens modalities) were "perfor- mance decliners" (Fig. 1), while the rest experienced consistently good performance throughout the day. Among the decliners, the most common pattern was one of fuctuating decline, meaning that there were moments of better or worse performance throughout the day, not just at the end of the day. 2. A feeling of "eye tiredness" was the most common symptom articulated by decliners, reported by 78% of those who experienced declining performance. 3. Decliners were more likely to engage in 10 or more activities throughout the day, such as working on their laptop or PC, sending emails or texts on their phone, using apps or running errands. They were also more likely to shift between different environments through- out the day.
